Description/Abstract:
WHEN A NUCLEAR REACTOR EQUIPPED WITH HOLLOW SLUGS GETS OUT OF CONTROL, THE SLUGS EVENTUALLY MELT. SINCE THE SLUGS THEN ASSUME MORE COMPACT SHAPE, THERE IS A RESULTANT DECREASE IN THE "BLACKNESS", WHICH TENDS TO REVERSE THE RUNAWAY. A THEORETICAL APPROACH IS DEVISED WHICH PROVIDES A QUALITATIVE MEASURE OF THIS "BUILT-IN SAFETY FACTOR". THE RESULTS COMPARE FAVORABLY WITH THOSE OBTAINED EXPERIMENTALLY BY LANNING AND STINSON.
