Description/Abstract:
A SOURCE BOOK ON PLUTONIUM, ITS DEPOSITION AND RETENTION IN THE HUMAN BODY, AND METHODS TO REDUCE THE PLUTONIUM HAZARD. A HISTORICAL REVIEW OF PLUTONIUM AND THE GENERAL CONTAMINATION SITUATION, ALONG WITH A REVIEW OF EARLY U.S. POLICY (EG. MANHATTAN PROJECT). THE BIOLOGY OF PLUTONIUM CONTAMINATION IS DISCUSSED ALONG AS WELL AS CURRENT RESEARCH IN THE FIELD. NEW IDEAS SUCH, SUCH AS LUNG LEVAGE, AND THE USE CHELATING AGENTS, ARE INTRODUCED WHICH ARE CURRENTLY BEING USED TO REDUCE PLUTONIUM BODY BURDENS. THAT PLUTONIUM WHICH REMAINS IN THE BODY AFTER INHALATION (THE MOST LIKELY, AS WELL AS MOST DANGEROUS, INGRESS METHOD INTO THE BODY) IS TRANSLOCATED FROM THE LUNG TO OTHER ORGANS IN THE BODY, AND THE BURDENS, DOSE AND DOSE RATES ARE COMPUTED. THE CONCLUSION REACHED BASED ON THE 1965 LUNG MODEL AND SHOWN EVEN MORE IN THE PROPOSED 1973 LUNG MODEL, IS THE LUNG IS THE CRITICAL ORGAN NOT THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM. FORIEGN STANDARDS ARE PRESENTED, AND DECONTAMINTATION METHODS AND OPERATIONS ARE DISCUSSED. THERE MANY REFERENCES TO OTHER DOCUMENTATION ON THESE MATTERS.
