Description/Abstract:
ON 13 SEPTEMBER 1987, AN ABANDONED TELETHERAPY SOURCE WAS FOUND IN AN ABANDONED MEDICAL CLINIC IN GOIANIA, BRAZIL BY JUNK DEALERS. THE SOURCE WAS REMOVED FROM ITS SHIELD, TAKEN HOME, AND BROKEN OPEN. THE RESULTING DISTRIBUTION OF THE SOLUBLE 137CSCL EXPOSED MANY PERSONS EXTERNALLY AND INTERNALLY, ENDED IN THE DEATHS OF SEVERAL PERSONS, AND CONTAMINATED A LARGE AREA OF THE CITY. BECAUSE SO MUCH OF THE PUBLIC AND THE CITY ENVIRONS WERE INVOLVED, THIS ACCIDENT IS ONE OF THE LARGEST THAT HAS OCCURRED, PROBABLY EXCEEDED ONLY BY THE NUCLEAR- REACTOR ACCIDENT AT CHERNOBYL IN 1986.
