Description/Abstract:
RADIATION INJURY MAY OCCUR FROM THE DEPOSITION OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS IN THE BODY. THIS HAS HAPPENED BECAUSE OF OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE, IATROGENICALLY, AND SECONDARY TO THE TESTING OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS. WHERE THE RADIATION DOSE IS LARGE, AS IN THE CASE OF RADIUM POISONING, THE CLINICAL SYNDROME PRODUCED IS UNIQUE AND THE DIAGNOSIS IS SIMPLE. WHEN DEMONSTRATION OF THE PRESENCE OF RADIUM IN THE BODY BY CERTAIN DOSE IS RELATIVELY SMALL, AS IN THE CASE OF THE DEPOSITION IN THE BODY OF FISSION PRODUCTS FROM NUCLEAR DETONATIONS, THE EFFECTS DO NOT APPEAR AS SPECIFIC CLINICAL SYNDROME BUT MAY RESULT IN A THEORETICAL STATISTICAL INCREASE IN CERTAIN PATHOLOGICAL STATES SUCH AS LEUKEMIA, SHORTENING OF LIFE SPAN, AND DELETERIOUS GENE MUTATIONS.
