Description/Abstract:
REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGISTS CAN TEST THE HYPOTHESIS OF WHETHER THE GONADOTROPHIC HORMONES MIGHT BE "UTILIZED" OR "CONSUMED" BY THE GONADS WHILE EXERTING THEIR STIMULATORY EFFECT. RATS WERE PRETREATED WITH ESTRADIOL (BENZOATE) ON DAY ONE, AND PREGNANT MARE SERUM ON DAYS 3, 6, AND 9. ON DAY 10, EACH RAT RECEIVED APPROXIMATELY 0.35 I.U. OF 125I- HGG VIA TAIL VEIN INJECTION. TWO RATS WERE SACRIFICED WITH LETHAL AMOUNTS OF ETHER FOLLOWING LAST ADMINISTRATION, AND APPROPRIATE ORGANS OBTAINED. WITHIN TWENTY MINUTES FOLLOWING ADMINISTRATION THE RADIOACTIVITY IN THE OVARY INCREASED TO AN OVARIAN/BLOOD RATIO OF 3.0. FURTHER CONCENTRATION OF RADIOACTIVITY WAS OBSERVED AT LATER PERIODS WITH PEAK VALUES OF 7.0 AND 8.03 NOTED AS THE 45 AND 120 MINUTE INTERVALS, RESPECTIVELY. THIS DATA DEMONSTRATE THAT 125I-HGG IS ACTIVELY CONCENTRATED BY THE OVARY OF THE PSEUDOPREGNANT RAT. INSPECTION OF THE VARIOUS ORGANS/BLOOD RATIOS OBTAINED INDICATE THAT INCREASED BLOOD FLOW THROUGH THE OVARY WOULD NOT BY ITSELF EXPLAIN OUR DATA. THE QUESTION AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THE PROCESS OF LABELLING HGG WITH 125I ALTERS THE MOLECULE SO THAT IT FOLLOWS A DIFFERENT METABOLIC PATHWAY FROM THAT OF NONLABELLED HGG MUST BE ANSWERED BY FURTHER STUDY.
