Description/Abstract:
PLUTONIUM INJECTION STUDIES - PUBLISHED JOURNAL PROBLEMS OF PLUTONIUM TOXICOLOGY BY L. A. BULDAKOV, E. R. LYUBCHANSKII, YU. I. MOSKALEV AND A. P. NIFATOV, TRANSLATION AND PRODUCTION PREPARED FOR THE U. S. ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION, DIVISION OF BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE. AMONT THE VARIOUS RADIOISOTOPES, PLUTONIUM IS OF EXCEPTIONAL PRACTICAL IMPORTANCE. UNDER NATURAL CONDITIONS IN THE CRUST OF THE EARTH, PLUTONIUM IS FORMED IN MINUTE QUANTITIES AS A RESULT OF THE CAPTURE BY URANIUM NUCLEI OF NEUTRONS FROM SPONTANEOUS FISSION OR COSMIC RAYS. INFORMATION ON THE KINETICS OF METABOLISM AND THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECT OF PLUTONIUM CONSISTS OF SINGLE CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS AND OF A LARGE NUMBER OF DISCONNECTED EXPERIMENTAL DATA, WHICH ARE OFTEN CONTRADICTORY AND NOT READILY ACCESSIBLE TO THE AVERAGE READER. THEREFORE THE TIME WAS RIPE FOR A SUMMARIZATION, SYSTEMATIZATION, AND ANALYSIS OF THE PUBLISHED DATA RELATING TO THE TOXICITY OF PLUTONIUM, ONE OF THE MOST PRACTICALLY IMPORTANT AND MOST DANGEROUS RADIOISOTOPES AND ONE WHICH HAS BECOME A COMPONENT PART OF OUR ENVIRONMENT.
