Description/Abstract:
OLSON, GAGE AND CHORDACK HAVE PRESENTED IN THIS ISSUE OF GASTROENTEROLOGY AN INTERESTING CASE OF CARCINOMA OF THE STOMACH FOLLOWING MASSIVE E DOSES OF X-RAY THERAPY. THE INITIAL DIAGNOSIS OF GASTRIC CANCER MADE IN 1934 WAS SUPPORTED BY CLINICAL AND ROENTGENOLOGIC EVIDENCE. IN OCTOBER 1935 A MASS WAS PRESENT; THE GROSS FINDINGS AT OPERATION CERTAINLY WERE IN ACCORD WITH THE DIAGNOSIS OF GASTRIC NEOPLASM; NO BIOPSY WAS TAKEN. THE AMOUNT OF RADIATION ADMINISTERED, 11,637 ROENTGENS, WAS MASSIVE. THE OPERATION 1 DECEMBER 1951 DISCLOSED AN UNEXPECTED INFILTRATING CARCINOMA IN ADDITION TO DEFINITE EVIDENCE OF LONG-STANDING RADIATION INJURY. THIS LEADS TO THE QUESTION OF: WHAT PROCESS WAS TAKING PLACE IN THIS STOMACH 1934 AND 1951? THE AUTHORS CONCLUDED THAT AN INITIAL LYMPHOMA OR BENIGN ULCER DISAPPEARED AFTER IRRADIATION; THE RADIATION INJURY PERSISTED; FINALLY CARCINOMA SUPERVENED.
