Description/Abstract:
THE PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT IS TO DISCUSS SOME PUBLIC HEALTH ASPECTS OF HUMAN EXPOSURE TO IONIZING RADIATION. RECENTLY, EPIDEMIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS IN PREGNANCY MAY BE AN ETIOLOGICAL FACTOR IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LEUKEMIA OR OTHER MALIGNANT DISEASES IN CHILDHOOD. EVIDENCE ALSO SUGGESTS THAT RADIATION HAS MUTAGENIC CAPACITY, NOT MERELY IN "FLIES AND MICE" BUT WITH WHATEVER TYPE OF LIVING SYSTEM HAS BEEN TESTED, INCLUDING MICROORGANISMS, PLANTS OF DIFFERENT PHYLA, INSECTS, AND MAMMALS.
