Description/Abstract:
THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE RECENT ADVANCES IN RESEARCH IN RADIOTHERAPEUTICS DUE TO THE INFLUENCE OF CYTOLOGY AND CYTO-CHEMISTRY, GENETICS, RADIO-ACTIVE TRACER METHODS AND NUCLEAR PHYSICS. FOR INHIBITION OF MITOSIS, THE POINT OF MAXIMUM RADIO-SENSITIVITY IS USUALLY CONSIDERED TO BE DURING THE PROPHASE STAGE OF BUILDING-UP OF THE CHROMOSOME STRUCTURE. CELLS CAUGHT BY RADIATION IN PROPHASE ARE TEMPORARILY FROZEN. SOME OF THESE CELLS RETURN TO THE RESTING STAGE WITH THE CHROMOSOME NUMBER DOUBLED. WITH THE VERY SMALLEST DOSES, RECOVERY MAY APPEAR TO BE COMPLETE, SO THAT THERE MAY BE A SLIGHT TRANSIENT INCREASE IN THE PERCENTAGE OF CELLS IN MITOSIS AFTER THE TEMPORARY INHIBITION. WITH INCREASING DOSES OBVIOUS RECOVERY IS PROGRESSIVELY LESS COMPLETE. INCLUDED IN THIS DISCUSSION ARE THE FOLLOWING: (1) THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CHROMOSOME BREAKAGE. (2) THE DEPENDENCE OF THE BIOLOGICAL EFFICIENCY OF DIFFERENT RADIATIONS UPON SPECIFIC IONIZATION. (3) THE PRODUCTION OF ARTIFICIAL GAMMA RAY SOURCES FOR USE IN RADIOTHERAPY BY MEANS OF THE PILE. (4) THE THERAPEUTIC POSSIBILITIES OF 32-P, 131-I, AND OTHER RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES.
