Description/Abstract:
AN ATTEMPT OF MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY ABSORBED BY CELLS FROM GAMMA-RAY AND X-RAY DOSAGES IS MADE IN THIS PAPER. THE ENERGY ABSORBED IN A CELL MAY NOT BE THE SOLE FACTOR DETERMINING THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF THE RADIATION ON THE CELL. THE CHANGES PRODUCED MAY ALSO DEPEND ON THE DAMAGE CAUSED TO ITS NEIGHBORS, WHICH MAY, IN THEIR TURN, HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY THE RADIATION. IT IS, FOR INSTANCE, GENERALLY BELIEVED THAT THE EFFECTS ON THE SKIN AT THE CENTER OF A LARGE RADIATION FIELD ARE GREATER FOR A GIVEN DOSE IN ROENTGENS THAN AT THE CENTER OF A SMALL FIELD.
