Description/Abstract:
A STUDY USING RADIOACTIVE 198-AU IN GOLD SEEDS FOR CANCER THERAPY WAS EXAMINED IN THIS BRIEF ARTICLE. THE GOLD SEEDS WERE IMPLANTED INTO MICE. BECAUSE THE 0.411 MEV GAMMA RAYS FROM 198-AU HAVE A HALF- THICKNESS IN SOFT TISSUES ONLY ABOUT 60 PERCENT AS GREAT AS IN THE CASE OF THOSE FROM 60-CO AND, SINCE THEY ARE ALSO MUCH MORE READILY ABSORBED THAN MOST OF THE GAMMA RAYS EMITTED BY RADIUM, IT IS FELT THAT 198-AU MAY PROVE TO BE AN ADVANTAGEOUS SUCCESSOR TO RADON FOR PERMANENT SEED IMPLANTATIONS, AS WELL AS TO 60-CO AND TO RADIUM FOR REMOVABLE SOURCES IN INTERSTITIAL THERAPY.
