Description/Abstract:
THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE END RESULTS OF CANCER CASES AND THE FACTORS DETERMINING THEM. THE END RESULTS IN THE TREATMENT OF CANCER DEPEND LARGELY UPON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE TREATMENT EMPLOYED. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW SITUATIONS, SUCH AS CANCER OF THE EXTERNAL SKIN AND OF THE CERVIX OF THE UTERUS, SURGERY IS THE METHOD OF CHOICE. THIS PAPER STATES THAT THE COMPLETE OR RADICAL OPERATION IS THE METHOD WHICH YIELDS THE GREATEST NUMBER OF CURES AND SHOULD BE PERFORMED EVEN IN THE EARLIEST AND MOST FAVORABLE TYPES OF THE DISEASE. SURGERY MAY BE FURTHER SUPPLEMENTED BY PREOPERATIVE AND POSTOPERATIVE RADIATION, ALTHOUGH THE FINAL DECISION AS TO THE VALUE OF THESE MEASURES HAS NOT YET BEEN ESTABLISHED. FOR ADVANCED CASES, UNSUITED TO ATTEMPTS AT RADICAL CURE, RADIATION THERAPY WITH ROENTGEN RAYS AND WITH RADIUM, OCCASIONALLY SUPPLEMENTED BY SURGERY, PROLONGS LIFE AND MITIGATES THE DISTRESSING SYMPTOMS OF THE DISEASE TO AN EXTENT UNEQUALLED BY ANY OTHER TREATMENT AT PRESENT AVAILABLE.
