Description/Abstract:
THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE END-RESULTS OF TREATMENT OF BREAST CANCER CASES AT THE MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL COVERING ALL CASES WHICH ENTERED THE HOSPITAL FROM 1921 THROUGH 1923. IN COMPARISON WITH PREVIOUS SERIES, THE PERCENTAGE OF FIVE-YEAR CURES HAS GRADUALLY INCREASED SINCE 1904. TWENTY-NINE PERCENT OF ALL CASES ENTERING THE HOSPITAL ARE FREE FROM DISEASE FOR MORE THAN FIVE YEARS, AND 36 PERCENT OF THE CASES OF RADICAL OPERATION ARE FREE FROM DISEASE FOR MORE THAN FIVE YEARS. THE HISTOLOGICAL GRADING OF THE DEGREE OF TUMOR MALIGNANCY IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE IN PROGNOSIS, BUT IT MUST BE CONSIDERED IN CONNECTION WITH THE EXTENT OF THE DISEASE AND WITH OTHER FACTORS AFFECTING THE PROGNOSIS. TUMORS PATHOLOGICALLY OF HIGH-GRADE MALIGNANCY METASTASIZE EARLY TO THE AXILLARY LYMPH NODES AND ELSEWHERE. PROPHYLACTIC X-RAY THERAPY WAS EMPLOYED ALMOST AS A ROUTINE IN THIS SERIES, AND THE IMPROVED RESULTS IN THE SERIES MAY BE IN PART DUE TO THIS TREATMENT.
