Description/Abstract:
THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE GENETIC HAZARD TO THE GENERAL POPULATION AS A RESULT OF RADIATION. THIS WAS DISCUSSED ON FEBRUARY 21, 1952. MEASUREMENTS OF RADIATION DOSES TO REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS OF AN UNSELECTED GROUP OF PATIENTS WERE INVESTIGATED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE MALE PATIENTS HAD AN AVERAGE DOSE FROM X-RAYS OF 66 MR AND FEMALES HAD AN AVERAGE OF 121 MR. ADDITIONAL X-RAY SPOT EXPOSURE BROUGHT THE TOTAL UP TO 128 MR FOR MALES AND 193 MR FOR FEMALES. THIS DOSE WAS COMPARED WITH THAT DUE TO NATURAL RADIATION, WHICH WAS ESTIMATED, FOR A 30-YEAR PERIOD, AS 3000 MR FROM COSMIC RADIATION AND 900 MR FROM 40K IN THE BODY. THE AMOUNT OF MUTATIONS FOR MAN IN ANY GIVEN GENERATION APPEAR WITH A FREQUENCY OF ONE IN 10(E + 5) OR 10(E + 6) GAMETES PER GENERATION. THE AMOUNT OF RADIATION NECESSARY TO DOUBLE THIS RATE OF MUTATION IS ABOUT 50 R PER GENERATION IN DROSOPHILA.
