Description/Abstract:
THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE INCIDENCE OF LEUKEMIA IN PHYSICIANS AND THE EVIDENCE THAT RADIATION MAY BEAR A CAUSAL RELATIONSHIP TO LEUKEMIA. A SURVEY WAS MADE OF THE DEATH LISTS OF PHYSICIANS GIVEN IN THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE PERIOD 1933 - 1942. IT WAS ALSO NECESSARY TO SELECT DATA FROM THE GENERAL POPULATION FOR COMPARISON WITH THE PHYSICIANS. IT WAS FOUND THAT OUT OF 26,788 PHYSICIANS, FOR WHOM THE CAUSE OF DEATH WAS GIVEN, 2,443 OF THESE DEATHS WERE DUE TO CANCER, AND OF THESE, 143 WERE DUE TO LEUKEMIA. THUS, 0.53 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL DEATHS AND 5.9 PERCENT OF THE DEATHS FROM CANCER WERE ASCRIBABLE TO LEUKEMIA. DURING THAT SAME TIME PERIOD, DATA FROM THE DEATHS OF 1,361,786 WHITE MALES OF THE GENERAL POPULATION SHOWED THAT 144,840 WERE DUE TO CANCER AND 5,286 TO LEUKEMIA. IN THIS CASE, 0.29 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL DEATHS AND 3.6 PERCENT OF THE DEATHS FROM CANCER WERE ATTRIBUTED TO LEUKEMIA.
