Description/Abstract:
DATA ON THE EFFECTS OF RADIOACTIVE EXPOSURE ON HUMANS IS COMPILED IN THIS ARTICLE. 21 OF 25 MEN WHO WERE EXPOSED TO PLUTONIUM DURING THE MANHATTAN PROJECT PROVIDED SOME OBSERVABLE DATA TO THE LOS ALAMOS SCIENTIFIC LABORATORY. THE REPORTED DATA ON AILMENTS OF THESE SUBJECTS (NOT NECESSARILY ATTRIBUTABLE TO RADIATION EXPOSURE) ARE AS FOLLOWS: ONE PERSON HAD A CORONARY OCCLUSION, ANOTHER DIED IN 1959 OF A CORONARY AT AGE 38, ANOTHER HAD A HAMARTOMA OF THE LUNG SURGICALLY REMOVED WITHOUT COMPLICATION, A FOURTH HAD MELANOMA OF THE CHEST WALL, AND A FIFTH HAD A PARTIAL GASTRECTOMY FREE-BLEEDING ULCER. IN 1945 AND 1946 18 PERSONS, WHO WERE THOUGHT TO BE TERMINALLY ILL, RECEIVED PLUTONIUM PARENTALLY. ALL BUT TWO RECEIVED 238PU ONLY (ONE RECEIVED 238PU AND 239PU AND ANOTHER RECEIVED ONLY 238PU). THEY WERE ADMINISTERED BETWEEN 0.3 TO ABOUT 6 UCI WHICH IS ABOVE THE OCCUPATIONAL MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE BODY BURDEN FOR 239PU AT 0.04 UCI. FOUR OF THE ORIGINAL GROUP WERE ALIVE IN NOVEMBER 1973. ONE PARTICULAR MALE AT AGE 58 WHO WAS SUFFERING FROM GASTRIC CARCINOMA AND GASTROINTESTINAL HEMORRHAGE DIED 21 YEARS LATER FROM CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE.
