Description/Abstract:
A SCIENTIFIC REPORT DATED SEPTEMBER 20, 1950. A COOPERATIVE RESEARCH PROJECT STARTED UNDER THE MANHATTAN ENGINEER DISTRICT AND COMPLETED UNDER CONTACT FOR THE ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY ESTABLISH MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE BODY BURDEN FOR PLUTONIUM. VERIFY AND QUALIFY PAST ANIMAL RESEARCH DATA. PROVIDE THE BASIS FOR QUANTIFYING THE DEGREE OF EXPOSURE TO PLUTONIUM. PROVIDE MORE DATA AND QUANTIFY THE EXISTING DATA ON THE DEPOSITION AND EXCRETION OF PLUTONIUM BY MAN. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE INFORMATION NEEDED COULD ONLY BE GAINED BY ADMINISTERING SMALL AMOUNTS OF PLUTONIUM TO TWELVE INDIVIDUALS WITH A RELATIVELY SHORT LIFE EXPECTANCY. THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED BY A JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN THE LOS ALAMOS SCIENTIFIC LABORATORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AND THE ATOMIC ENERGY PROJECT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER. THE DATA WAS GAINED BY ANALYSIS OF VARIOUS BIOASSAY SAMPLES TAKEN BEFORE AND AFTER INJECTION OF THE PLUTONIUM. RESULTS OF THE STUDY: EXCRETION RATE FOR PLUTONIUM IN HUMAN WAS DETERMINED. DISTRIBUTION OF PLUTONIUM IN THE HUMAN BODY WAS DETERMINED. RESULTS OF THE STUDY WAS CORRELATED WITH DATA FROM OTHER STUDIES TO DETERMINE DOSAGE AND BODY BURDEN FOR PLUTONIUM.
