Description/Abstract:
LETTER TO R S STONE FROM J J NICKSON, DTD 18 JUN 45; ROUTINE PLUTONIUM ASSAY OF URINE OF CHICAGO PERSONNEL (61 SPECIMENS) AND FROM OTHER SITES (40 SPECIMENS). NONE OF THE CHICAGO SPECIMENS HAD HIGH ACTIVITY THERE IS A DISCUSSION OF THE PROPERTIES OF THE CITRATE COMPLEX OF PLUTONIUM. RESULTS ARE OF INDIVIDUAL SAMPLES, 12 HOUR SAMPLES AND 24 HOUR SAMPLES. INDIVIDUAL'S URINE SAMPLES WERE ANALYZED, THEN 12 HOUR SAMPLES WERE ANALYZED, AND FINALLY 24 HOUR SAMPLES WERE USED IN THE STUDY. THE AMOUNT OF PLUTONIUM ORIGINALLY INJECTED INTO MX-100 WAS 6.7 UG. A SERIES OF PLUTONIUM ANALYSES USING THE IR-4H RESIN BATCH TEST METHOD WERE CARRIED OUT. THE RESULTS OBTAINED WERE COMPARED WITH THOSE OBTAINED USING WET-ASHING LAF3 METHOD. RESULTS ON THESE LOW LEVEL OF SAMPLES WERE SIMILAR. THE CONCLUSION WAS THAT THE IR-41 METHOD IS A REAL TIME SAVER EVEN THOUGH THE RESULTS WILL VARY CONSIDERABLY WITH SUCH LOW ACTIVITIES.
