MEMO TO JAMES ROBERTSON OF HUMAN HEALTH AND ASSESSMENTS DIVISION DATED OCTOBER 29, 1986 FROM JAMES H. STEBBINGS, S. D. EPIDEMIOLOGY GROUP LEADER. DISCUSSION OF CASE 40-003 BEING THE ONLY SURVIVOR OF 19 PU/AM INJECTION CASES. INJECTION WSA RECEIVED AT BERKELEY, HAD A BONE SARCOMA. CONTINUES TO HAVE COMPLAINTS COMMON TO HIS AGE (HYPERTENSION, ARTHRITIS), NOTHING WHICH WOULD BE ASCRIBED TO PLUTONIUM. JAMES H. STEBBINGS, S. D. SENT LETTER TO CASE AND WIFE FOR INDICATION OF WILLINGNESS (OR NOT) TO BE IDENTIFIED. PROMPT REPLY WAS NOT ANTICIPATED AS THEY NEED TO DISCUSS THIS WITH THEIR CHILDREN WHO LIVE SOME DISTANCE AWAY. DISCUSSED ANOTHER CASE INJECTED AT AGE 5 YEARS, IN CALIFORNIA. OSTEOGENIC SARCOMA (LETHAL IN 1947 IN AUSTRALIA: NOT A U. S. CITIZEN); "ONE WONDERS IF THEY WERN'T HOPING FOR SOME CURES." AMERICIUM CASE (OUR 30-032), WAS ALSO A CALIFORNIA OSTEOGENIC SARCOMA CASE, DIED IN 1948.
