SEVEN-PAGE REPORT "THE QUANTITATIVE DETERMINATION OF PLUTONIUM IN BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS - PART II. ANALYSIS OF STOOLS" WRITTEN BY E. R. RUSSELL AND G. BROWN DATED JUNE 13, 1945. A ROUTINE SURVEY OF THE FECAL PLUTONIUM EXCRETION WILL NOT GIVE ACCURATE INFORMATION AS TO THE BODY CONTENT BUT IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO ESTIMATE THE EXPOSURE OF THE INDIVIDUAL. IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT THE PROBLEM OF DETECTING VERY MINUTE QUANTITIES OF PLUTONIUM IS DEPENDENT ON THE COUNTING APPARATUS AS WELL AS THE PROCEDURE ADOPTED FOR THE ISOLATION OF THE ELEMENT. THE METHODS WHICH PROVIDE THE MOST CONSISTENT RESULTS ARE THE THIOPHENYLTRIFLUORACETONE PROCEDURE AND THE BISMUTH PHOSPHATE PROCEDURE. BOTH OF THESE METHODS MAKE USE OF PRELIMINARY WET-ASHING OF THE SAMPLE.
