Description/Abstract:
THE TEXT OF THE PHONE CALL RECORD BETWEEN SIDNEY MARKS AND LOUIS HEMPELMANN, DATES MARCH 28, 1974, IS GIVEN BELOW. OF NOTE IS THE REFERENCE TO 1944 PLUTONIUM INJECTIONS. "I REQUESTED DR. HEMPELMANN TO HOLD OFF ON SEARCHING THROUGH THE LANGHAM FILES AT LASL UNTIL WE RECEIVE CLEARANCE FROM THE DIVISION OF INSPECTION TO GO AHEAD. HE IS PERSONALLY WILLING TO COMPLY WITH THIS REQUEST. IN THE MEANTIME HE SAID THAT HE HAD CHECKED WITH BILL NEUMANN AT THE ATOMIC ENERGY PROJECT IN ROCHESTER AND DISCOVERED A REFERENCE TO INJECTION OF PLUTONIUM IN 1944 INTO TWO PATIENTS WHO WERE FATALLY ILL. THESE ARE IN ADDITION TO THE 18. HE SAID THAT HE DID NOT ENTER THE CLASSIFIED FILES IN VIEW OF THE SENSITIVITY OF THE SITUATION. HE RECALLED THAT IN THE LASL FILES THERE IS A 2-INCH THICK FOLDER OF WRIGHT LANGHAM'S CORRESPONDENCE INCLUDING A LETTER TO CHRISTINE WATERHOUSE."
