Description/Abstract:
ASSAY OF MILK FOR FALLOUT IODINE-131 FROM NEVADA TESTS DURING 1962 IND ICATE THE AVERAGE THYROID DOSE OF ABOUT 1.0 RAD TO THE 53,000 UTAH INF ANTS UNDER 2 YEARS OLD. UNFORTUNATELY, IODINE-131 HAD NOT BEEN MEASUR ED IN MILK OR IN PEOPLE DURING EARLIER TESTING. HOWEVER, THYROID DOSE S FROM THE EARLIER TESTS CAN BE ESTIMATED CRUDELY USING AIR BETA CONCE NTRATIONS AND PUBLISHED YIELDS OF ANNOUNCED DETONATIONS. THE NUMBER O F EXPOSED UTAH INFANTS AND THEIR ESTIMATED AVERAGE THYROID DOSES ARE L ISTED FOR EACH YEAR OF NEVADA TESTING: YR. 1951, INFANTS UNDER 2 YRS. 40,000, ESTIMATED DOSE (RAD) 0.4; YR. 1952, INFANTS UNDER 2 YRS. 41,0 00, ESTIMATED DOSE (RAD) 3.8; YR. 1953*, INFANTS UNDER 2 YRS. 43,000, ESTIMATED DOSE (RAD), 6.3; YR. 1955, INFANTS UNDER 2 YRS. 45,000, ESTI MATED DOSE (RAD), 2.0; YR. 1957, INFANTS UNDER 2 YRS. 47,000, ESTIMATE D DOSE (RAD), 8.6; YR. 1958, INFANTS UNDER 2 YRS. 48,000, ESTIMATED DO SE (RAD), 1.4; YR. 1962, INFANTS UNDER 2 YRS. 53,000, ESTIMATED DOSE ( RAD), 1.0. *ST. GEORGE, INFANTS UNDER 2 YRS. 700, ESTIMATED DOSE (RAD ), 68. USING UNVERIFIED ASSUMPTIONS, 0-22 THYROID CANCERS FROM NEVADA IODINE-131 FALLOUT ARE PREDICTED FOR UTAH CHILDREN. DESPITE UNCERTAI NTIES IN THESE ESTIMATES, THEY INDICATE THAT STUDIES FOR POSSIBLE DELA YED EFFECTS OF RADIATION SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR UTAH.
