Description/Abstract:
THIS REPORT INCLUDES THE RESULTS OF OBSERVATIONS OBTAINED FROM A MODEL STUDY OF TIDAL CURRENTS IN BIKINI LAGOON. THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY WA S TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF TIDAL CYCLES REQUIRED FOR THE TIDE TO CLE AR THE LAGOON AND TO LOCATE THOSE AREAS IN WHICH CONTAMINATION WOULD R EMAIN FOR THE LONGEST TIME. THE THEORETICAL MINIMUM NUMBER OF TIDE CYC LES REQUIRED FOR A COMPLETE CHANGE OF WATER IN THE LAGOON HAS BEEN SHO WN TO BE OF THE ORDER OF 45 CYCLES. THE MODEL STUDIES INDICATE THAT UN DER ACTUAL CONDITIONS, SOMETHING OF THE ORDER OF 200 CYCLES WOULD BE R EQURIED FOR A FAIRLY COMPLETE CHANGE OF WATER. CERTAIN LOCAL REGIONS W ERE OBSERVED TO BECOME FAIRLY DILUTE IN ABOUT 60 CYCLES. THE MODEL STUDIES INDICATE THAT CONTAMINATION PERSISTS LONGEST IN THE NORTH CENT RAL PORTION OF THE WESTERN HALF OF THE LAGOON. THERE ALSO APPEARS TO B E A TENDENCY FOR CONTAMINATION TO PERSIST IN THE REGION ADJACENT TO TH E NORTH CHAIN OF ISLANDS AND REEFS. THE EXTENT OF CONTAMINATION HERE, HOWEVER, IS CONTROLLED BY THE AMOUNT OF WATER MOVEMENT OVER THESE NORT HERLY REEFS.
