Description/Abstract:
THE SOUTHWESTERN RADIOLOGICAL HEALTH LABORATORY PERFORMED AERIAL MONIT ORING AND SAMPLING FOLLOWING THE FULL POWER TEST (EP-IIIA) OF THE NRX- A6 REACTOR ON DECEMBER 15, 1967. MONITORING WAS PERFORMED TO THE SOUTH WEST OF TEST CELL C AS FAR AS DEATH VALLEY. CLOUD EDGES WERE BETWEEN 2 15 DEGREES AND 262 DEGREES FROM TEST CELL C WITH THE HOTLINE DEFINED A T 230 DEGREES. AERIAL SAMPLING WAS PERFORMED OVER THE AMARGOSA DESERT AT 8,500 TO 10,000 FEET MSL. THE CLOUD VOLUME WAS CALCULATED TO BE 2.1 X 10E12 CUBIC METERS AS IT CROSSED THE SAMPLING PATH. SAMPLE RESULTS SHOWED AN AVERAGE GROSS BETA PARTICULATE CONCENTRATION OF 2.4 X 10E5 P ICOCURIES/METER CUBED AT 1230 HOURS WITH A GROSS BETA PARTICULATE INVE NTORY OF 5 X 10E5 CURIES. THE GROSS BETA ACTIVITY DECAYED AT THE RATE OF T TO THE MINUS 1.3. THE INVENTORY OF GASEIOUS RADIOIODINES AT 1230 HOURS WAS CALCULATED TO BE 182 CURIES. GRAB SAMPLES OF AIR SHOWED NO R ADIONUCLIDES OF INERT GASES. ANALYSIS FOR TRITIUM AND CARBON-14 SHOWED ONLY BACKGROUND LEVELS. ANDERSEN IMPACTOR SAMPLES INDICATED THAT 87 P ERCENT OF THE PARTICULATE ACTIVITY HAD AN AERODYNAMIC SIZE LESS THAN O .3 MICROMETERS.
