FROM VERY PRECISE ME ASUREMENTS OF CHEMICAL ABUNDANCES OVER A WIDE RANGE OF ELEMENTS AND ON MANY SAMPLES THEY HOPE TO IDENTIFY THE SOURCE OF MATERIALS USED IN FA SHIONING ANCIENT ARTIFACTS FROM OBISDIAN AND ALSO TO ESTABLISH A NEW W AY TO STUDY VOLCANOES AND LAVA FLOWS.BOSIDIAN ARROWHEADS AND BLADES FO UND AT LUBAANTUN ON THE EAST COAST OF NICARAGUA ARE BEING TRACED BY HA RRY BOWMAN TO THE LAVA FLOWS FROM WHICH THEY CAME. ONE SOURCE IS THE VOLCANO H1 CHAGAL ON THE WEST COAST OF GUATEMALA. OBSIDIAN IS A HARD BRITTLE VOLCANIC GLASS--USUALLY SHINY BLACK--THAT CAN CHIP LIKE FLINT.
