Description/Abstract:
ONE OF SEVERAL RESEARCH DEVICES IN THE ERDAS PROGRAM TO HARNESS THE PO WER OF FUSION IS THE ORMAK AN EXPERIMENT LOCATED AT ERDAS ORNL. ORMAK IS BEING USED TO TEST A SPECIAL TECHNIQUE OF HEATING CALLED NEUTRAL B EAM INJECTION. NEUTRAL BEAM INJECTION IS A MAJOR APPROACH TO ACHIEVIN G THE NECESSARY REACTION TEMPERATURE (IN THE RANGE OF 100,000,000 DEGR EES C.) REQUIRED FOR THERMONUCLEAR FUSION. DURING CONSTRUCTION A WORK ER INSPECTS THE VERTICAL MAGNETIC COILS THAT SURROUND ORMAKS DOUGHNUT- SHAPED PLASMA REGION. THE COILS IN TURN ARE SURROUNDED BY THE INCH TH ICK ALUMINUM SHELL SEEN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH. THESE COILS WILL CREATE A POWERFUL MAGNETIC "BOTTLE" THAT WILL PREVENT THE PLASMA FROM TOUCHING THE SOLID WALLS. SHOULD THE SUPER HEATED PLASMA COME IN CONTACT WITH THE WALLS IT WOULD BE COOLED AND THE FUSION REACTION WOULD BE QUENCHED .
