Description/Abstract:
THE SNAP-TSF REACTOR A REACTOR SIMILAR IN DESIGN TO THOSE PROPOSED AS AUXILIARY ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEMS IN SPACECRAFT AND IN MANNED ORBITIN G LABORATORIES HAS BEEN INSTALLED AT THE AECS ORNL TOWER SHIELDING FAC ILITY OAK RIDGE TENN. FOR A SERIES OF MEASUREMENTS THAT WILL AID IN TH E DESIGN OF SHIELDS TO PROTECT THE CREW AND INSTRUMENTATION FROM THE R EACTOR RADIATIONS. THE EXPERIMENTS CONSIST IN ENERGY AND ANGULARDISTR IBUTION MEASUREMENTS OF LEAKAGE SPECTRA THAT IS DETERMINATIONS OF THE ENERGY AND ANGLE OF EMERGENCE OF NEUTRONS AND GAMMA RAYS EMITTED FROM THE REACTOR CORE. THE RESULTS WILL BE COMPARED WITH LEAKAGE SPECTRA C ALCULATED BY RADIATION TRANSPORT TECHNIQUES UTILIZING THE BEST AVAILAB LE TRANSPORT TECHNIQUES UTILIZING THE BEST AVAILABLE CROSS SECTIONS FO R INTERACTIONS WITHIN THE CORE. IF THE CALCULATED AND MEASURED SPECTR A AGREE THEN IT CAN BE ASSUMED THAT THE TRAANSPORT METHODS ARE RELIABL E AND THAT THE INTERACTION CROSS SECTIONS USED FOR THE MATERIALS IN TH E CORE ARE CORRECT. THE METHODS CAN THEN BE APPLIED WITH CONFIDENCE T O OTHER PROPOSED CORE CONFIGURATIONS.
