RICHLAND WASHINGTON...THE WORLDS FIRST CHEMICAL SEPARATIONS FACILITY F OR EXTRACTING PLUTONIUM FROM IRRADIATED URANIUM FUELS IS AT THE AECS H ANFORD WORKS IN SOUTHEASTERN WASHINGTON. THE FACILITY WAS RETIRED WHE N THE PROCESS BECAME OBSOLETE BUT IT HAS BEEN PUT BACK INTO USE AS A F ACILITY FOR DECONTAMINATING AND REPAIRING EQUIPMENT WHICH HAS FAILED. THE CONCRETE "CRAYON" WAS BUILT IN 1943-44. IT IS 85 FEET WIDE 875 L ONG AND 102 FEET HIGH. WALLS ARE THREE TO EIGHT FEET THICK DEPENDING ON SHIELDING REQUIREED FOR THE ORIGINAL PROCESS.
