NATIONAL REACTOR TESTING STATION IDAHO...DETECTION OF MICROSCOPIC FLAW S IN MATERIALS IS PROVIDED BY ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT IN THE MOBILE ACOUS TIC ANALYSIS LABORATORY DEVELOPED IN 1969 AT THE NATIONAL REACTOR TEST ING STATION IN IDAHO. THE EQUIPMENT CALLED THE INCIPIENT FAILURE DETE CTION SYSTEM MONITORS THE FINY SOUNDS EMITTED BY MICROSCOPIC CRACKS OR FLAWS IN MATERIALS UNDER STRESS. AS THE STRESS LEVEL INCREASES A WEA K FLAW WILL GROW SLIGHTLY AND EMIT ACOUSTIC ENERGY. THE NRTS DETECTIO N SYSTEM CAN DETECT REPEATED GROWTHS AND ALSO PROVIDE DATE FOR LECATIN G THE FLAW. ACOUSTIC ANALYSIS TECHNOLOGY CAN BE APPLIED TO ALL METAL STRUCTURES BUT A CHIEF GOAL IS TO USE IT FOR MONITORING NUCLEAR POWER PLANT PRIMARY SYSTEMS TO ASSURE THEIR SAFE OPERATION. THE SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED FOR THE AEC BY IDAHO NUCLEAR CORPORATION
