EXPLORATORY CORE DRILLING OPERATIONS TO FIND A SUITABLE LOCATION FOR S TUDYING THE EFFECT OF HEAT ON SHALE ROCK ARE BEING CONDUCTED ON THE ER ERCY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ADMINISTRATIONS RESERVATION IN OAK RIDGE TENNESSEE AS PART OF A GEOLOGICAL STUDY RELATED TO EERDAS NATIONAL PR OGRAM FOR SAFE TERMINAL STORAGE OF COMMERCIAL HIGH LEVEL NUCLEAR WASTE . THE OAK RIDGE RESERVATION WAS CHOSEN AS A MATTER OF CONVENIENCE AND BECAUSE THE UNDERLYING SHALE FORMATION IS REPRESENTATIVE OF MORE EXTE NSIVE SHALE FORMATIONS FOUND IN OTHER STATES. IF THE CORE DRILLING RE SULTS IN THE SELECTION OF A SUITABLE LOCATION ELECTRIC HEATERS WILL BE PLACED INTO A 40 FOOT DEEP HOLE FOR ONE YEAR AFTER WHICH THE EFFECTED SHALE WILL BE ANALYZED TO DETERMINE IF ANY PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL CHANG ES HAVE OCCURRED. THE HEATERS SIMULATE THE EFFECT THAT HIGH LEVEL WAS TE MIGHT HAVE ON THE SHALE FORMATION. OTHER FORMATION TO BE INVESTIGA TED IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY ARE SALT, SALT DOMES, CLAYS, GRANNET AND OTHER CRYSTALLINE ROCKS.
