Description/Abstract:
SOME GENERALIZATIONS ARE DRAWN FROM OUT STUDY OF 496 PERSONS HAVING SK ELETAL BURDENS OF RADIUM (RADIUM-226) OR ITS 5.7-YEAR HALF-PERIOD ISOT PE, MESOTHORIUM (RADIUM-228). THE DURATION OF THEIR EXPOSURE WAS USALL Y LESS THAN 1 YEAR, BUT EXTENDS TO AS LONG AS 20 YEARS. THEIR BURDEN T IME IS MOST COMMONLY 40 TO 50 YEARS, BUT COVERS A RANGE OF 4 TO 65 YEA RS. DOSIMETRY IS PERFORMED AT 3 LEVELS: (1) GROSS DOSIMETRY (WHOLE BOD Y PARAMETERS SUCH AS MEASURED TERMINAL BURDEN, ESTIMATED INITIAL BURDE N, OR CUMULATIVE RADS OF SKELETAL AVERAGE DOSE), (2) MACRODOSIMETRY (M EASUREMENTS ON INDIVIDUAL BONES OR BONE GROUPS), AND (3) MICRODOSIMETR Y (MEASUREMENT OF DOSE RATE AND ESTIMATION OF CUMULATIVE DOSE TO SMALL REGIONS OF SPECIFIC TARGET TISSUES). MEASUREMENTS OF THE RADON CONCEN TRATION IN THE SINUS AND MASTOID AIR SPACES SHOW THAT RADON AND ITS DA UGHTER PRODUCTS CONTRIBUTE A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE TOTAL ALPHA-RA Y DOSE TO THE SINUS AND MASTOID EPITHELIUM. IN ONE PERSON WHO DEVELOPE D A CARCINOMA IN THE FRONTAL SINUS, THE CUMULATIVE DOSE TO THE REGION OF THE NUCLEI OF BASAL CELLS IN THE SINUS EPITHELIUM EXCEEDED 82,000 R ADS (MOSTLY FROM THE UNDERLYING BONE) WHILE THE SKELETAL AVERAGE DOSE WAS ONLY 3,000 RADS.
