Description/Abstract:
IN THIS REPORT WE DESCRIBE THE RESEARCH DONE AT LOS ALAMOS IN SUPPORT OF THE HYDROLOGY / RADIONUCLIDE MIGRATION PROJECT (HRMP) DURING FY 19 91. LOS ALAMOS PERSONNEL HAVE ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED IN HRMP ORGANIZATI ONAL PROGRAMS AND ALSO IN U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY / NEVADA OPERATION S OFFICE ACTIVITIES DIRECTED TOWARD GROUNDWATER PROTECTION AND ENVIRON MENTAL RESTORATION. WE HAVE PRESENTED PAPERS AT SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS AN D PUBLISHED ARTICLES IN THE OPEN LITERATURE DESCRIBING OUR WORK AT THE NEVADA TEST SITE. WE HAVE CONTINUED OUR MEASUREMENTS OF THE SPATIAL D ISTRIBUTION OF FISSION PRODUCTS IN THE CAVITY / CHIMNEY REGION AOUND E XPENDED NUCLEAR TESTS. THE PUMPING PHASE OF THE CAMBRIC EXPERIMENT END ED IN AUGUST 1991. ABOUT 92 PERCENT OF THE TRITIUM AND 43 PERCENT OF T HE 85-KRYPTON HAS MOVED FROM THE CAVITY TO THE PUMPED WELL (RNM-2S). W E HAVE NOT DETECTED CATIONS SUCH AS 137-CESIUM IN THE EFFLUENT FROM RN M-2S. WE ARE CONTINUING TO MONITOR THE CONCENTRATIONS OF TRITIUM IN TH E PIEZOMETER TUBES AT UE3E NO. 4; EVIDENCE INDICATES THAT THERE IS A L ARGE CONCENTRATION GRADIENT OF TRITIUM IN ONE OF THESE TUBES. WE HAVE PERFORMED LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS WITH TUFF FROM UE3E NO. 4 THAT LEAD US TO BELIEVE 137-CESIUM DID NOT MIGRATE TO THAT HOLE BY A GROUNDWATE R TRANSPORT MECHANISM. WE HAVE ADDED 99-TECHNETIUM TO THE LIST OF ANIO NS WHOSE ELUTION PATTERN CAN BE DETERMINED IN THE WATER PUMPED FROM RN M-2S AT THE CAMBRIC SITE.
