THE MANUEL LUJAN, JR. NEUTRON SCATTERING CENTER (LANSCE) IS A PULSED S PALLATION NEUTRON SOURCE EQUIPPED WITH TIME-OF-FLIGHT SPECTROMETERS FO R CONDENSED-MATTER-SCIENCE RESEARCH. NEUTRON SCATTERING IS A POWERFUL TECHNIQUE FOR PROBING THE MICROSCOPIC PROPERTIES OF CONDENSE MATTER B ECAUSE THE ENERGIES AND THE WAVELENGHTS OF THERMAL NEUTRONS ARE CLOSEL Y MATCHED TO TYPICAL EXCITATION ENERGIES AND INTERATOMIC DISTANCES IN SOLIDS AND LIQUIDS. BECAUSE NEUTRON SCATTERING CROSS SECTIONS DO NOT VARY IN A SYSTEMATIC MANNER WITH THE ATOMIC NUMBER OF A SCATTERING NU CLEUS, NEUTRONS AND X-RAYS CAN PROVIDE COMPLEMENTARY STRUCTURAL INFORM ATION. THE ISOTOPIC DEPENDENCE OF NEUTRON-SCATTERING CROSS SECTIONS IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT IN BIOLOGICAL STUDIES BECAUSE BOTH HYDROGEN AN D DEUTERIUM SCATTER NEUTRONS STRONGLY BUT WITH DIFFERENT CROSS SECTION S. THE FACT THAT THE NEUTRON MAGNETIC MOMENT COUPLES TO UNPAIRED ELECT RONS IN A SCATTERING SAMPLE MAKES NEUTRONS AN IDEAL PROBE FOR MICROSCO PIC MAGNETIC PHENOMENA.
