Description/Abstract:
At approximately 6:45 P.M. April 28, 1945, due to a mechanical failure, bellows twisted off valve on the product drain line which is located in the pit of this room. The process material that was in this line was in a liquid stage. After the valve had twisted off, approximately 30 lbs. of the 80 original lbs. which was in the drum escaped out into the room turning to a heavy fog or smoke when it came into contact with the atmosphere. Due to heavy concentrations, it was almost impossible to see across the room, and it was impossible to look down into the pit due to the heavy vapors. More information about the conditions at the time of the spill are enclosed.
