Description/Abstract:
The proposed plan discusses the purpose and scope, history and mission, framework for developing site treatment plans for Argonne National Laboratory - East, and related activities. The site traces its early operation to the Metallurgical Laboratory, the scientific group under Enrico Fermi that achieved the world's first controlled nuclear chain reaction in 1942 as part of the World War II Manhattan Project. Currently, Argonne - East is a multi-program research and development center which first pursued work for peaceful uses of the atom after the War. The plan deals with characterized low level mixed waste, TRU waste, and high level mixed waste streams and provides a discussion of each stream, treatment technology needed, and the preferred option. Schedules and time frames for implementation of treatment plans for these wastes are included.
