Arctic Foundations, Inc. (AFI) has been developing, desiging, fabricating, installing, and improving ground freezing systems since the early 1970s. Thermopiles (self refrigerating load carrying piles) and Thermoprobes (self refrigerating heat removal devices) both remove heat from soil by virtue of being thermosyphons. This system is demonstrated in the field of soil freezing, barrier techniques for containing plumes, field work at radioactively contaminated sites, and obtaining environmental permits.
