This document provides supporting infomraiton and evaluation for the U.S. Department of Energy's Record of Decision for the Stockpile Stewardship and Management (SSM) Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement on siting, constructing, and operating the National Ignition Facility (NIF). One of the factors assessed is the choice of a solid-state, glass-laser driver over other conceptual design technology options to meet the NIF mission of achieving ignition and evaluating specific weapons relaibility and performance issues. Technology options and siting alternatives are evaluated with respect to providing the basis for the conceptual design technology and the preferred alternative for meeting the mission need of NIF.
