Description/Abstract:
The Department of Energy-Oak Ridge Operations Office requested that each installation operated by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc., prepare an action plan and schedule for implementation of five elements of a Waste Management System. The five elements were: waste stream identification; waste stream characterization; waste disposition; documentation; and oversight/audit. In addition, the request included a "Waste Stream Identification and Evaluation" form to be completed for each waste stream and compiled in "Process/Waste Stream Identification Books." Wastes at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory are collected, treated, and disposed of by systems and procedures designed for that purpose. Review and assessment of the existing waste management systems at ORNL indicate that the "waste disposition" element is well implemented and documented, and summary descriptions of the waste treatment and disposal systems are included in the text of the plan. A general action plan for upgrading and extending implementation of the waste system elements at ORNL has been defined for each waste category. The remainder of this document focuses on providing detailed descriptions and evaluations of the status of ORNL waste streams to support the proposed action plan and provide a basis for implementation of the plan. Figures and tables are included in this report.
