Description/Abstract:
The Homogeneous Reactor Experiment No. 2 (HRE-2) usually referred to in the project literature as the Homogeneous Reactor Test (HRT), is the second experimental aqueous homogeneous reactor to be constructed under the program of the United States Atomic Energy Commission for the evaluation of nuclear power reactors. It was designed, constructed, and operated at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory during the period 1956-1961, at which time the program was terminated. The purpose of this design report is to describe the reactor in detail in a single issue and to provide a convenient reference to the many reports pertaining to the design of the reactor. This document describes the HRE-2 process design; component design; reactor containment cell and shield design; equipment layouts, piping design, and maintenance; reactor physics, safety, stability, and hazards; chemical technology of fuel solution; instrumentation, controls, and electrical system, and a HRE-2 cost analysis. Figures, tables, flowsheets, etc., are included in this manual.
