Description/Abstract:
A program of hot cell evaluation and demonstration of the Zirflex and Sulfex process flowsheets was discussed with du Pont representatives from Wilmington and Savannah River on April 13, 1961. Fuel pins with irradiation levels up to 40,000 Mwd/T will be processed. This memo outlines major problems associated with processing highly irradiated stainless steel-clad and Zircaloy-clad UO-2 pelletized fuels along with a list of specific objectives and a revised schedule. The work will be conducted in Cell 2, Building 3507 beginning July 1 and will be completed as rapidly as possible in FY-1962. About equal time will be devoted to each process and the Zirflex work will be done first. The program includes testing a modified Purex first-cycle of solvent extraction in "mini" mixer equipment using conditions specified by Savannah River. Figures and tables are included.
