This report is in response to a request by the Health Physics Department for a study of health and accident hazards connected with operations in Department M12P. The chief function of Department M12P is the purification of product level uranium hexafluoride for subsequent conversion to uranium tetra fluoride of sufficient quality and consistency to meet the product specifications required by the Atomic Energy Commission. Allied to this function are the recovery and processing of salvage incident to the prime function, maintenance of a material control system consistent with security and efficiency, and the maintencance of building and equipment functions necessary to routine operations. General procedures such as direct process procedures and salvage procedures are discussed. Included in report are a summary of uranium compounds handled, chemicals used in the direct process, additional chemicals used in routine salvage operations, and fumes personnel are subject to possibly be exposed to. Diagrams are also included in report.
