Description/Abstract:
THE OBJECTIVE OF THESE EXPERIMENTS IS TO STUDY THE INSTABILITIES THAT OCCUR IN THE ACCELERATION OF A PLASMA BY A MAGNETIC FIELD. FOR A CLASS OF PLASMA GENERATORS AND IN ASTROPHYSICAL PROBLEMS THE RATE OF ACCELERATION OF THE BY THE MAGENTIIC FIELD IS RAPIC ENOUGH TO EXCLUDE THE MAGNETIC FIELD FROM WITHIN THE PLASMA. THIS GIVES RISE TO CONDITIONS OF INSTABILITY THAT HAS BEEN DISCUSSED THEORETICALLY AND NOT OBSERVED EXPERIMENTALLY. SINCE FUTURE THINKING ON SUCH DESIGNS REVOLVE AROUND KNOWLEDGE OF INSTABILITIES, IT WOUDL SEEM IMPORTANT TO FIRM EXPERIMENTAL FOUNDATION TO THE THEORY OF INSTABILITY GROWTH.
