Description/Abstract:
THIS REPORT SUMMARIZES DATA FROM PROJECT SUNSHINE FOR THE PERIOD MARCH 1955 TO APRIL 1956. THIS PROJECT ATTEMPTED TO EVALUATE THE DANGER OF FISSION PRODUCT CONCENTRATIONS, ESPECIALLY STRONTIUM-90. THE METABOLISM OF CALCIUM AND STRONTIUM WAS STUDIED IN HUMANS BY GIVING INTRAVENOUS INJECTIONS OF CALCIUM-45 (LESS THAN 27 MICROCURIES) AND STRONTIUM-85 (LESS THAN 110 MICROCURIES) TO TERMINAL CANCER PATIENTS AT MONTEFIORE HOSPITAL IN NEW YORK. RADIOCHEMICAL ANALYSES WERE CARRIED OUT AT LAMONT LABORATORIES AT COLUMBIA, NEW YORK. PATIENT SURVIVAL FOLLOWING RADIONUCLIDE ADMINISTRATION VARIED FROM THREE DAYS TO THREE MONTHS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ONE PATIENT WHO SURVIVED THREE YEARS. OTHER PROJECTS IN THIS REPORT INCLUDE:1) ANALYSIS OF STRONTIUM-90 IN HUMAN BONE AUTOPSY SAMPLES, 2) STRONTIUM-90 IN FOODS AND FOREIGN SOILS, 3) RADIUM IN HUMAN AUTOPSY BONE SAMPLES, 4) ACTIVITY OF IODINE-131 AND BARIUM-140 IN VEGETATION, 5) STRONTIUM-90 CONTENT OF ANIMAL BONES, AND 6) IODINE-131 ACTIVITY IN HUMAN THYROIDS.
