THE EVANS HYPOTHESIS DERIVED FROM THE STUDY OF RADIUM-EXPOSED PERSONS INCLUDES TWO MAJOR POINTS: ( A ) THE LINEAR MODEL OF RADIATION CARCINO GENESIS I S INCORRECT, AND ( B ) " PRACTICAL " AND/OR ABSOLUTE THRESHO LDS EXIST BELOW WHICH HUMAN RADIATION CARCINOGENESIS DOES NOT OCCUR. A NALYSIS PRESENTED HERE INDICATES THAT NEITHER ASPECT OF THIS HYPOTHESI S CAN BE SUPPORTED, EITHER FROM THE STUDY OF RESIDUAL RADIUM BURDEN OR FROM CUMULATIVE RAD EXPOSURE. A SIMPLE LINEAR MODEL OF CARCINOGENESIS, USING 25 RADS AS DOUBLING DOSE, IS CONSISTENT WITH THE OBSERVATIONAL MATTER OVER THE RANGE 0 - 50000 CUMULATIVE RADS. THE MARINELLI THOROTR AST EXPERIENCE IS ALSO CONSISTENT WITH THIS LINEAR MODEL. THIS CONCEPT OF A " PRACTICAL " THRESHOLD RESTS UPON A PURPORTED INCREASE IN LATEN CY ( OR LATENCY + INDUCTION ) PERIOD WITH DECREASE IN ACCUMULATED DOSE . THE ANALYSIS PRESENTED HERE INDICATES THERE IS NO SUPPORT WHATEVER F OR THE " PRACTICAL " THRESHOLD. THE OBSERVATIONS ARE CONSISTENT WITH T HE POSSIBILITY THAT LATENT PERIOD OR ( LATENT PERIOD + INDUCTION PERIO D ) MAY BE THE SAME AT 5 RADS AS AT 50000 RADS. THIS ANALYSIS IN NO WA Y ATTEMPTS TO SHOW THAT " PRACTICAL " OR ABSOLUTE THRESHOLDS ARE IMPOS SIBLE. RATHER, THE RESULTS OF ANALYSES SHOW THAT NO EVIDENCE FOR SUCH THRESHOLDS HAS BEEN PRESENTED THROUGH THE STUDIES OF RADIUM-EXPOSED PE RSONS.
