Description/Abstract:
MEASUREMENTS OF RADIONUCLIDE CONTENT IN WHOLE TREES DURING THE 1969-19 72 PERIOD HAVE PROVIDED SCALE FACTORS FOR ESTIMATING THE DOSE DELIVERE D TO TREE COMMUNITIES AS A RESULT OF NUCLEAR TESTING TO DATE. THESE SC ALE FACTORS CAN BE USED TO PROVIDE MEASURES OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL D OSE TO TREES PER UNIT OF RADIOACTIVITY INTRODUCED INTO THE NORTHERN HE MISPHERE STRATOSPHERE ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN OF THE 3 MEGATON CHINES E TESTS. TO DATE THESE FACTORS APPLY ONLY TO THE NEW ENGLAND AREA. FUR THER MEASUREMENTS OF A SIMILAR NATURE TO THOSE PERFORMED IN THIS WORK WILL BE REQUIRED TO EXTEND THE SCALING MODEL TO OTHER CLIMATIC REGIMES . THE RARE EARTH NUCLIDES ARE FOUND TO BE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CONTRIB UTORS TO BETA DOSE RECEIVED BY MERISTEMATIC TISSUE. THE CERIUM-144 - P RASEDYMIUM-144 PAIR ALONE MAY DELIVER AN INFINITY DOSE OF .1 EFFECTIVE RAD PER MEGATON EQUIVALENT OF STRATOSPHERIC SOURCE, WHERE EFFECTIVE I S THE FRACTION OF BETA DECAY ENERGY ABSORBED BY YOUNG TISSUE. WE ESTIM ATE THAT 6 EFFECTIVE RADS HAVE BEEN DILVERED TO ONE AND TWO YEAR TWIG TISSUE OF THE WHITE PINE FROM THE 1961 - 1962 U.S. - U.S.S.R. TEST SER IES IN NEW ENGLAND, BY CERIUM-144 - PRASEODYMIUM-144.
