Description/Abstract:
THERE IS URGENT NEED FOR SCIENTIFIC DATA ON THE ACTUAL AMOUNTS OF RADI OACTIVE FALLOUT BURDEN BEING CARRIED WITHIN THE BODY BY POPULATIONS IN THE VICINITY OF THE NEVADA TEST SITE. PUBLISHED INFORMATION SHOWS TH AT SOME TEN THOUSAND PERSONS IN UTAH, EAST OF THE SITE, HAVE BEEN SUBJ ECTED TO A FULL BODY GAMM RAY DOSE OF THREE TO FOUR ROENTGENS. THIS D OSE AMOUNTS TO ABOUT THIRTY TIMES THAT WHAT OTHER PERSONS IN THE UNITE D STATES HAVE HAD TO ABSORB; AND INDICATES THE POSSIBILITY OF UNUSUALL Y HIGH STRONTIUM-90 IN THE BONE AND IODINE-131 IN THE THYROID FOR THAT GROUP. OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES WHICH HAVE RESPONSIBILITY IN THI S FIELD HAVE NOT FURNISHED SUFFICIENT DATA TO RESOLVE THESE QUESTIONS. ACTUAL ANALYSES OF HUMAN BONE, FOOD AND SOIL FROM THESE AREAS ARE NE EDED. IN THE ABSENCE OF DIRECT INFORMATION, AN ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE IN THE PRESENT PAPER TO ESTIMATE FROM THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES AND INDIR ECT DATA WHAT THE AMOUNT OF STRONTIUM-90 AND IODINE-131 HAS BEEN TO DA TE IN THOSE AREAS WHICH RECEIVED THREE TO FOUR ROENTGENS OF GAMMA RADI ATION. THE METHOD IS SUBJECT TO CONSIDERABLE UNCERTAINTY BUT HAS BEEN CHECKED AGAINST OTHER INFORMATION. THE RESULT INDICATES THAT THE AMO UNT OF STRONTIUM-90 DEPOSITED PERSQUARE MILE ON THE ABOVE-MENTIONED AR EAS BY NEVADA BOMB TESTS TO DATE MAY BE ABOUT TEN TIMES THE 1956 AVERA GE VALUE FOR FALLOUT FROM ALL SOURCES IN THE UNITED STATES. DEPENDING ON THE DIETARY HABITS OF THE PEOPLE CONCERNED, THIS AMOUNT OF LOCAL F ALLOUT WOULD RESULT IN A MORE OR LESS SERIOUS ACCUMULATION OF STRONTIU M-90 IN THE BONE WITHIN A DECADE OR TWO. SOME PERSONS IN THE AREA WOU LD EXCEED THE PRESENTLY ACCEPTED BUT ARBITRARY "MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE CO NCENTRATION" OF ONE-HUNDRED "SUNSHINE UNITS." THE ABOVE ESTIMATES ARE , OF COURSE, NOT AN ADEQUATE SUBSTITUTE FOR ACTUAL LABORATORY DETERMIN ATIONS.
