Description/Abstract:
THE TATUM DOME SITE, NEAR HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI, HAS BEEN HOST TO T WO NUCLEAR DETONATIONS AND TWO NONNUCLEAR GAS DETONATIONS. THE TOP OF THE CAVITY FORMED BY THE DETONATIONS WAS 2,660 FEET BELOW LAND SURFAC E AND 1,160 FEET BELOW THE TOP OF THE SALT DOME. ALL DETONATIONS WERE TOTALLY CONTAINED WITHIN THE SALT DOME IN WHICH THEY WERE FIRED. ACTIV ITIES AT THE SITE OCCURRED BETWEEN 1964 AND 1970. THE LONG-TERM HYDROL OGIC MONITORING PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE SITE WAS INITIAT ED IN APRIL 1972. THE MONITIORING PROGRAM INDICATED BACKGROUND CONCENT RATIONS OF TRITIUM IN SURFACE WATER AND IN THE PRINCIPAL AQUIFERS. HOW EVER, TRITIUM IN ABOVE BACKGROUND CONCENTRATIONS WAS FOUND IN THE HALF MOON CREEK OVERFLOW POND. EXTENSIVE STUDIES WERE UNDERTAKEN TO DETERM INE THE DISTRIBUTION AND SOURCE OF TRITIUM IN THE SURFICIAL SOILS AT T HE TATUM DOME SITE. THE CONCLUSION OF THESE INVESTIGATIONS WAS THAT TR ITIUM WAS RESIDUAL FROM THE SURFACE CLEANUP OF THE SITE AND WAS NOT TH E RESULT OF ANY UPWARD MIGRATION OF RADIOACTIVITY FROM THE CAVITY OF T HE NUCLEAR DETONATION WITHIN THE SALT DOME.
