Description/Abstract:
THE TATUM DOME SITE, NEAR HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI, HAS BEEN HOST TO T WO NUCLEAR DETONATIONS AND TWO NONNUCLEAR GAS DETONATIONS. THE TOP OF THE CAVITY FORMED BY THE DETONATIONS WAS 2,660 FEET BELOW LAND SURFACE AND 1,160 FEET BELOW THE TOP OF THE SALT DOME. ALL DETONATIONS WERE T OTALLY CONTAINED WITHIN THE SALT DOME IN WHICH THEY WERE FIRED. ACTIVI TIES AT THE SITE OCCURRED BETWEEN 1964 AND 1970. THE LONG-TERM HYDROLO GIC MONITORING PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE SITE WAS INITIATE D IN APRIL 1972. THE MONITORING PROGRAM INDICATED BACKGROUND CONCENTRA TIONS OF TRITIUM IN SURFACE WATER AND IN THE PRINCIPAL AQUIFERS. HOWEV ER, TRITIUM IN ABOVE BACKGROUND CONCENTRATIONS WAS FOUND IN THE HALF M OON CREEK OVERFLOW POND. EXTENSIVE STUDIES WERE UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMIN E THE DISTRIBUTION AND SOURCE OF TRITIUM IN THE SURFICIAL SOILS AT THE TATUM DOME SITE. THE CONCLUSION OF THESE INVESTIGATIONS WAS THAT TRIT IUM WAS RESIDUAL FROM THE SURFACE CLEANUP OF THE SITE AND WAS NOT THE RESULT OF ANY UPWARD MIGRATION OF RADIOACTIVITY FROM THE CAVITY OF THE NUCLEAR DETONATION WITHIN THE SALT DOME. IN 1978, NV WAS ASKED TO PRO VIDE PROOF THAT RADIOLOGICAL CONTAMINATION WAS NOT ADVERSELY AFFECTING WATER QUALITY IN THE AQUIFERS OVER THE TATUM DOME. TO ANSWER THIS REQ UEST, A PROGRAM OF RADIOCHEMICAL AND HYDROLOGICAL RESEARCH WAS DEVELOP ED IN 1979 WITH COOPERATION OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI. THIS PROGRAM INVOLVED DRILLING AND COMPLETING WELLS IN EACH AQUIFER ABOVE THE SALT DOME. ALL EXCEPT THE SURFICIAL AQUIFER, WHICH WAS KNOWN TO BE CONTAMIN ATED BY TRITIUM, WERE EXTENSIVELY TESTED TO OBTAIN HYDROLOGICAL DATA. SUFFICIENT SAMPLES WERE TAKEN TO DETERMINE IF CONTAMINATION EXISTED IN THE AQUIFER AROUND THE EMPLACEMENT CASING AT SURFACE GROUND ZERO (SGZ ). LOW TRITIUM CONCENTRATIONS WERE FOUND IN THE LOCAL AQUIFER, APPROXI MATELY 150 TO 200 FEET BELOW LAND SURFACE, DURING THIS PROJECT, BUT NO RADIOACTIVITY WAS FOUND IN ANY OF THE OTHER AQUIFERS ABOVE TATUM DOME . THE LOCAL AQUIFER IS THE NEXT AQUIFER BELOW THE SURFICIAL AQUIFER.
