Description/Abstract:
ANALYSES OF THE POTASSIUM AND IODINE CONTENTS OF IODINE POTASSIUM TRI- IODIDE-IMPREGNATED CARBONS SHOW A POSITIVE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE RAT IO OF IODINE TO POTASSIUM IODINE/POTASSIUM AND THE RADIOIODINE PENETRA TION MEASURED BY THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE DESORPTION TEST. WHEN THE ATOM R ATIO OF IODINE/POTASSIUM EXCEEDS APPROXIMATELY 0.30, THERE IS A LOG-AR ITHMIC INCREASE IN IODINE PENETRATION WITH A LINEAR NCREASE IN THE IOD INE/POTASSIUM RATIO. THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE DESORPTION TEST, THEREFORE, PROVIDES A VALUABLE STANDARD QUALITY CONTROL TEST FOR COMMERCIAL POTAS SIUM TRI-IODIDE CARBONS. DETERIORATION OF WATER REPELLENCY AND TENSILE STRENGTH OF HIGH-EFFICIENCY PATICULATE AIR (HEPA) FILTER MEDIA DURING NORMAL SERVICE WAS FOUND TO AFFECT NORMAL SERVICE WAS FOUND TO AFFECT SIMULATED ACCIDENT PERFORMANCE OF FILTERS MORE SIGNIFICANTLY THAN SIMILAR DETERIORATION RESULTING FROM R ADIATION EXPOSURE. HOWEVER, NEITHER RADIATION EXPOSURE NOR MEASURED SE RVICE DEGRADATION OF PARTICULATE FILTERS WOULD BE EXPECTED TO SERIOUSL Y IMPAIR OVERALL PERFORMANCE OF THE SAVANNAH RIVER CONFINEMENT SYSTEM IF AN ADEQUATE NUMBER OF CONFINEMENT COMPARTMENTS RECEIVE APPROXIMATEL Y EQUAL LOADING OF ACTIVITY FOLLOWING A POSTULATED REACCTOR ACCIDENT.
