Description/Abstract:
A RAPID AND INEXPENSIVE METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PLUTONIUM IN U RINE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. THE PRINCIPLE DEPENDS ON SEPARATING MACROMOLE CULAR PLUTONIUM SPECIES BY ULTRAFILTRATION, AND DIRECTLY ASSAYING THE MATERIAL RETAINED ON THE MEMBRANE BY SCINTILLATION COUNTING. THE LIMIT OF DETECTION OF THE METHOD IS 0.04 PICO CURIES .1-1 AND THE ANALYSIS TIME EXLUDING COUNTING IS ABOUT 2 HOURS. ROUTINE ASSAY DOES NOT REQUIR E USE OF THE ISOTOPE DILUTION TECHNIQUE ALTHOUGH THE PLUTONIUM CAN BE CHRACTERISED IF NECCESSARY BY A SIMPLE ADDITIONAL STAGE OF ANALYSIS.
